Networking is a brilliant way to promote your business, meet new people, engage with your target audience, increase your brand awareness and really get your business out there. However, that doesn’t mean that networking in Peterborough isn’t challenging.

Attending your first networking event in Peterborough can be pretty scary. Entering a room full of people you don’t know, for an event you have no idea about the layout of.

You may have put loads of pressure on yourself to meet lots of new people and leave with a dozen sales, but that isn’t how networking in Peterborough works.

Networking is about building robust and professional relationships. Here at Connect Business Networking we strongly believe in a ‘Know, Like and Trust’ mantra. Our networking events in Peterborough are all about getting to know others in the room so you can like them and over time trust them. That is when the sales and referrals come in to your business.

Everyone will have been a newbie networker at some time, so the people in the room will know how you feel. They will understand that you might be nervous or unsure. They will be willing to meet you, chat with you and introduce you to others. This is especially the case at Connect Business Networking.

In this article we have put together a beginner’s guide to networking in Peterborough, if you follow your tips you should feel more confidence on arriving at your first networking event.

Be Prepared

Take a look at the networking group website to see if they have a layout of the event so you know what to expect. Check where the networking event in Peterborough is, if there is parking nearby, what time it starts and what time people arrive from. Make sure you pack your business cards, but also a pen and paper to take note of anything you want to follow up on.

Be Confident

Confidence will come with practice, and the more you go networking in Peterborough, the more confident you will begin to feel. However, for that first networking event you may feel that everyone in the room is out of your league, but you’re probably wrong. For example, at Connect Business Networking we have businesses of just one person to 50 people, businesses that are a few months old, through to 25 years old. Remind yourself that you have something to offer to the room too.

Be You

Networking is about building real relationships, and this can’t be done if you aren’t being real. Don’t feel like you need to act in a certain way or say certain things – just be yourself. People buy people, so show off the real you and you’ll be able to build good quality relationships much quicker.

Don’t Snub

The person in the corner of the room that may be dressed in a dirty t-shirt and jeans might not look like the sort of person you want to speak to, but give them a try. Just as we learnt in school, you should never judge a book by its cover. Go over and chat to them, they may be the exact client you are looking for, or perhaps a member of their family is looking for the service you offer.

Follow Up

If you saw someone do a really good elevator pitch at the networking event, or you spotted a business that was of interest, then follow up. Arrange to meet for a 1-2-1 so you get to know each other better. It’s all about the Know, Like and Trust – get to know people and what they do better, they’ll get to know you and your business better, and this will result in the leads and referrals you want.
